You know how you sometimes get a cold or flu and have to stay home from school to feel better? Well, that's kind of what happened to the airplanes and the people who work with them all around the world. There's a sickness called COVID-19 that started in one country and then spread around the world. Because it's really easy to catch, people were asked to stay home to stop it from spreading even more.
But when people stayed home, they didn't need to travel as much, which meant they weren't flying in airplanes very often. And when they weren't flying, the airplanes didn't have much to do. Some airlines had to stop flying altogether because they didn't have enough money to keep the planes in the air. This meant that lots of pilots and flight attendants lost their jobs, which is really sad.
Even though some people still needed to travel, there were new rules in place to keep everyone safe, like wearing masks and not sitting too close to each other. But because there weren't as many people traveling, the airlines didn't make as much money as they used to. This means that some of the airplanes might not be able to fly as often, or that the airlines might take longer to recover.
So, just like when you get sick and need to stay home to heal, the COVID-19 pandemic made airplanes and the people who work with them stay home for a while too. But hopefully, just like when you feel better and can go back to school with your friends, the airplanes and the people who work with them will be able to go back to normal soon too!
