ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

In re Aimster Copyright Litigation

Okay, so imagine you have a toy car that you really like playing with. You like it so much that you want to let your friends play with it too, but your mom tells you that you can't just give away your toy car because it's yours and it's not fair to the company that made it.

Now, imagine that a man named Johnny made a computer program called Aimster that lets him and his friends share music and other things over the internet. But the people who make the music and movies that Johnny's sharing don't like it because they say that he's not paying them for their work.

So, they went to court and said that Johnny was breaking the law by using Aimster to share their stuff without permission. They argued that just like your toy car, the music and movies are someone else's property and Johnny doesn't have the right to share them without asking.

Johnny argued that Aimster was just a tool to help him and his friends find and share music and that it wasn't his fault if they used it to share things they weren't supposed to.

The court eventually decided that Johnny was breaking the law because he knew that people were using Aimster to share copyrighted stuff without permission. They said that he couldn't just say it was other people's fault and that he had to take responsibility for what was happening on his program.

So, in the end, Johnny had to stop using Aimster to share copyrighted stuff and the people who make music and movies could keep making money off of their work.
