ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Inanimate whose

Inanimate means something that is not alive. Whose is a possessive pronoun, which is a word that is used to show something belongs to someone or something. So, when you use inanimate whose you are talking about something that cannot move or think on its own, but that has something that belongs to it. For example, you might say "the empty bookcase whose shelves were dust covered". In this sentence, the bookcase is inanimate because it is not alive, and whose shows that it has shelves which belong to it, even though it can’t think or move itself.
