ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Independent music

Independent music means music that is created by artists who do not work for big music companies or record labels.

Think of it like this, when you go to the store to buy toys, you can either pick one that is made by a big company like Lego or one that is made by a small toy-making company. Just like that, music can also be made by big companies or smaller ones.

Independent musicians make their own decisions on what kind of music they want to make, how they want to market it and what concerts they want to perform at. They don't have to stick to any rules that a big record company might impose on them. This gives them a lot of freedom to express themselves and create music that is unique and personal to them.

Independent music can be any genre, like rock, pop, hip hop, or electronic. You might have heard some independent musicians on the radio or on TV, but they probably didn't get there without a lot of hard work and without being noticed by record labels. Independent music is a way for artists to share their talent and create something that is meaningful to them, without having to worry about pleasing anyone else.
