Indian summer

Okay kiddo, so have you ever noticed how sometimes after summer ends, the weather gets cold and things start changing colors? Well, sometimes in North America, there is a period of time when the weather gets warm again, even though it's already fall. This is called "Indian summer".

So, you know how the sun gives us warmth and light? During Indian summer, the sun shines really bright and the air gets really still, which means it feels warm. This usually happens during September or October, and it can last for a few days or a few weeks.

Now, the name "Indian summer" is kind of tricky because it doesn't actually have anything to do with Native Americans. Some people think it might come from the fact that when European settlers first came to America, they noticed that Native Americans would sometimes take advantage of this warm spell to gather food for winter. Others think it might come from an old word that means "false summer".

But the important thing to remember is that Indian summer is a time when the weather feels warm and nice, even though it's usually supposed to be getting colder. So you can enjoy playing outside a little while longer before it's time to put on your big winter coat!
