Indigo dye

Indigo dye is a kind of color that turns things blue. It comes from a plant called the indigo plant. Long time ago, people discovered that if they soaked the leaves of the indigo plant in water, they could make a blue dye.

To make indigo dye, people still use that same method. They harvest the indigo plant and leaves, then they soak them in water to spread the dye color. Next, they mix it with some other special things, like lime and sodium hydroxide, to make it stronger and start a chemical reaction.

Then, they put the fabric they want to dye into that mixture and leave it for a while until the color is just right. It's really like a bath for the fabric! After that, they rinse and dry the fabric so the color stays and doesn't fade away.

Indigo dye is used to make clothes, bandanas, and other things that we use every day. So next time you see a blue shirt or pants, just think that it might have come from the indigo plant!
