ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Indus script

The Indus Script is a writing system that was used by people who lived 4,500 years ago in the Indus River Valley (which is now part of India and Pakistan). People thought that they used this writing system to keep records of things like what they traded, how much they traded, and who they traded with. However, experts still have not been able to figure out what the symbols in the script exactly mean.

Imagine you're a kid and you like making drawings that no one else can read. Just like that, the people of the Indus Valley also made their own way of writing down things, but it's a puzzle for adults because they can't figure out what it says. They have found these symbols on different things like seals (which are like stamps), pottery, and even on toys! Now, people try and put the symbols together, study and analyze them, but it's still a big mystery. Nevertheless, it's important because it tells us how people lived so long ago and how they communicated with each other.
