Inelastic neutron scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering is when we use tiny particles called neutrons to study the properties of different materials. The neutrons are like little ping-pong balls that we shoot at the material we want to study. When the neutrons hit the material, some of them bounce off, but some of them get absorbed by the material.

When the neutrons get absorbed, they can transfer some of their energy to the material. This can cause the atoms in the material to vibrate or move in different ways. By studying how the neutrons interact with the material and how the atoms respond, scientists can learn a lot about the properties of the material, like its structure and how heat and energy are transferred through it.

Inelastic neutron scattering is especially useful for studying materials that are difficult to study with other techniques, like those that are very dense or opaque. It can also help us understand how materials behave under extreme conditions, like at very high pressures or temperatures.
