Intermediate-term memory is like an old mailbox. When you put something in this mailbox, it stays in there for a little while (longer than a few seconds, but not as long as forever). You can take something out of the mailbox whenever you want, and you always remember how to get back to it. You can also keep adding things to it, and the things you put in will stay for the same length of time. So, when you need something a few days or weeks later, you know that you can go back to the mailbox and it will be there waiting for you.
