ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Internal energy

Internal energy is the energy that an object has inside it because of the way its molecules or atoms are arranged or moving. You can think of it like the energy that's inside a toy before you wind it up - it's still there even though you can't use it yet. When you wind the toy up, you turn the potential energy inside into kinetic energy, which is the kind of energy that can do work.
