The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is made up of organizations that help people affected by emergencies. It began more than 150 years ago when a Swiss man named Henry Dunant saw how wounded soldiers in a battle were not receiving help. He thought that special workers and helpers should be called in to help in difficult times. So he got together with some other people to form the International Red Cross, which was a way of providing help in times of war and other disasters. Later, with help from the Muslim world, they added the Red Crescent to help with medical emergencies in Muslim countries. Now, the Red Cross and Red Crescent are in many countries around the world. They help with natural disasters, like floods or earthquakes, wars and conflicts, by providing food, shelter, medical care and other things people need. They also train people to recognize danger signs and to be prepared for emergencies. It's a global network that works together to help people in need.
