ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Interstellar Boundary Explorer

Ok, let's imagine that you are in a big swimming pool full of water. The water in the pool is like a big ocean in space, but without any water. Instead of water, space is just empty.

In this space, there are a lot of things, like planets, stars, galaxies, and other things that we can't see with our eyes. But sometimes, some of these things send out tiny particles, like little bits of dust or gas. Just like when you splash water out of the pool, these particles get sent out into space too.

The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) is a special telescope that we have sent up into space to try and study these tiny particles. It's kind of like a very special microscope that can look at things that are too tiny for us to see with our eyes.

IBEX looks at these tiny particles and tries to figure out where they came from, and how they got all the way to our part of space. Sometimes, these particles come from very far away, and some of them even come from outside our own solar system!

By studying these particles, scientists can learn more about what is happening in space, like how stars are made and how different parts of space are connected. This can help us understand more about our own planet and how it fits into the bigger picture of space.
