Interstitial cystitis is a big word that means your bladder (which is like a balloon in your body that holds pee) is really unhappy and causing you a lot of discomfort.
Normally, when you have to pee, you can hold it until you find a bathroom. But with interstitial cystitis, your bladder feels like it has to pee all the time, even when it's not full. That's because the bladder is sending painful and urgent signals to your brain all the time, making you feel like you have to go pee over and over again.
This can be really frustrating and uncomfortable, and it can make it hard to do the things you want to do, like play with your friends, go to school, or even sleep.
Doctors don't know exactly what causes interstitial cystitis, but they think it might have something to do with the lining of your bladder (which is like a layer of skin inside the balloon). When this lining gets irritated or damaged, it can cause the bladder to become inflamed and painful.
Luckily, there are some things you can do to help manage interstitial cystitis. Drinking lots of water, avoiding certain foods and drinks that can irritate the bladder (like citrus fruits, spicy foods, and caffeine), and doing pelvic floor exercises can all help. Your doctor might also prescribe special medications or recommend other treatments to help ease your symptoms.
Remember, if you ever feel uncomfortable or unsure about anything related to your interstitial cystitis, make sure to talk to a trusted adult or doctor who can help you feel better.
