Ion source

An ion source is something that scientists use to create a beam of ions (tiny particles with either a positive or negative electrical charge). This beam is used for different kinds of experiments, like studying the structure of molecules. To make the beam, scientists put something inside the ion source which can be broken into its tiny parts. When electricity is then passed through this substance, it breaks the particles off and creates a stream of ions that flow out of the ion source.
