Do you know when you see a rainbow in the sky after it rains? It’s really pretty, right? Well, sometimes the sky can make colors like that even when it’s not raining. When that happens, we call it an iridescent cloud.
An iridescent cloud is a special kind of cloud that looks like it’s shining with all different colors. This happens because of something called diffraction. Diffraction is when light waves bounce around and make patterns. If the light waves hit tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the cloud just right, it can make the colors that we see.
So, next time you look up and see a cloud that looks like it’s glowing with lots of different colors, you can call it an iridescent cloud. And now you know why it looks so special and pretty!
