An Ishikawa diagram is a type of chart used to figure out what could be causing a problem. The diagram looks like a fish with many “fins” that help you brainstorm possible causes.
First you draw a big fish on a piece of paper. Then, you think about the problem you want to solve and write possible causes on each of the “fins” of the fish. These causes are usually related to people, machines, methods, materials, measurements, and the environment. After you write all of your ideas, you can talk with others to see if they have any additional ideas and add them to the Ishikawa diagram.
The Ishikawa diagram can help you figure out what is causing the problem so you can come up with a solution. It also helps you stay organized while you brainstorm.
