Islam in Portugal

Well, buddy, Islam is a religion followed by some people around the world. It was brought to Portugal by the Moors around 711 CE. The Moors were Muslim people who came from North Africa and controlled parts of Portugal for about 500 years. During this time, they built many beautiful buildings and added their own style of art and culture to the country.

However, in the 13th century, Portugal became a Christian country and the rulers didn’t want Islam to be practiced anymore. They banned the religion and forced Muslims to either convert to Christianity or leave the country. Many Muslims were forced to leave, but some continued to practice their religion secretly.

After many centuries, in the 1970s, Portugal became a democracy and allowed for freedom of religion. This means that people can practice any religion they want, including Islam. Today, there are many Muslims living in Portugal, and they have their own mosques and organizations. They are free to practice their religion and live their lives as they choose, just like anyone else in the country.
