ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Isolating language

Isolating language is when people use separate words to represent different ideas. Think of it like building a puzzle with words. Instead of having a few words that mean a lot of things, in an isolating language, every little part of the puzzle needs its own word.

So, for example, in English, the word "run" can mean a lot of things, like running a race, running the dishwasher or running away from something. But in an isolating language, each of those actions would have their own word, like "race-run," "dishwash-run" or "flee-run." It might seem like a lot of words, but it actually helps to make sentences easier to understand because each word stands on its own and doesn't get mixed up with other meanings.

Isolating languages are spoken in many parts of the world, like China, Vietnam or Thailand. They might sound a bit different because there are so many words, but once you start learning the puzzle pieces, it's just like any other language!
