J Harlen Bretz was a scientist who studied rocks and tried to figure out how they were formed. He noticed that some big rocks looked like they were moved by water, even though they were on land. He thought that maybe there was a big flood a long, long time ago that made these rocks move.
He looked at other rocks in the area and saw that they were all really strange and didn't look like they should be where they were. He called them "erratics" because they didn't belong.
Bretz thought that maybe there was a huge, powerful flood that happened a long time ago that moved these rocks around. He called this idea the "Missoula Floods" because he thought they came from a big lake called Missoula.
Even though some people didn't believe Bretz at first, he kept studying and finding more evidence. Eventually, scientists agreed that the Missoula Floods were real and that J Harlen Bretz was right!
