ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

January 2015 Mazraat Amal incident

Okay, so let's start with some background information. There's this place called Syria and people there have been fighting for a long time. They have two main groups - the government group and the rebel group - and they don't like each other very much. The government group is led by a man called President Assad, and the rebel group is made up of different groups who also don't agree with each other.

In January 2015, a group of rebels called the Nusra Front attacked a village called Mazraat Amal in Syria. The village is near a big city called Aleppo. The rebels attacked a group of soldiers who were part of the government group. They used guns, rockets and other weapons. The soldiers fought back. It was a big fight!

Lots of people died. Some reports say about 100 soldiers were killed and some 40 rebels were also killed. Some of the soldiers were captured and taken away by the rebels.

The government group was very angry. They thought the rebels were being very mean. So they decided to attack the rebels back. They called this an 'air raid'. They sent big planes into the sky and dropped bombs on the rebels. This happened a few days later.

It was a very sad time for the people who lived in the village and nearby areas. Many people had to leave their homes because of the fighting. Lots of people were hurt or killed.

The Mazraat Amal incident was just one of many events that have been happening in Syria for a long time. It made some people angrier and more determined to fight, while others just wanted peace and safety. It's important for people around the world to pay attention and try to find ways to help make things better for the people in Syria.
