ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Japonerie

Japonerie is a fancy word for something that happened a long time ago when Japan became really popular in other parts of the world. People in Europe and America started to really like things from Japan, like clothes, ceramics, and artwork. They thought these things were really cool and interesting, just like how you might think your favorite toy or cartoon is really cool and interesting.

People liked Japanese things so much that they started making their own versions of them. They copied the styles and designs of Japanese things and made them their own. This is kind of like when you make a drawing of your favorite animal or character, but you make it your own by adding your own special touches.

Some people even started changing their homes and gardens to look like they were in Japan. They did things like putting up Japanese-style screens, using Japanese-inspired fabrics, and planting Japanese-style gardens with special trees and plants. It was like they were pretending they were living in Japan!

Japonerie was really popular for a while, but eventually, people started to like other things instead. But today, we can still see some of the ideas and styles that came from Japan during that time in things like fashion, art, and design all over the world.
