ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Turquerie

Turquerie is something that happened a long time ago when people in Europe became very interested in the country of Turkey. They thought it was a really cool and exotic place with lots of interesting things. So they started making art and decoration that had things like images of Turkish people, clothes and animals. They also liked to dress up in fancy Turkish clothing and pretend they were from Turkey too!

It was kind of like a game of make-believe where people in Europe pretended they were from Turkey and made their homes look like they were in Turkey too. They painted pictures of Turkish people, put up Turkish carpets and had Turkish furniture. It was all pretend, but it was a way for people to show how much they liked Turkey and liked to pretend they were part of their culture.

Nowadays, we know that it's not really okay to pretend to be from another culture because it can be disrespectful. But back then, people thought it was a fun thing to do and it was a way of showing their love for the country of Turkey.
