Jazz (Henri Matisse)

Jazz by Henri Matisse is an artwork created in 1947 when Matisse was in his 80s. It is a colorful collage of cut-outs from painted papers, arranged in a pattern to create a picture. It looks like a lot of shapes and colors, like a rainbow of shapes! Matisse used different colors and shapes in his artwork because he wanted to bring happiness and joy to people who looked at it. When Matisse wrote about Jazz he said, “I felt in colors what music expresses in sound.” That means Matisse wanted to express the beauty and happiness of music with his artwork.
