Jewish immigration to Puerto Rico

Jewish people first began coming to Puerto Rico in the late 1500s. Up until this point, Puerto Rico had been mainly inhabited by Spanish settlers and African slaves. These Jewish people came from places such as Spain, Portugal, and Jamaica. They brought with them skills such as farming, trading, and crafts that helped to develop the economy of Puerto Rico. These skilled immigrants helped Puerto Rico become an important port for trade and commerce in the Caribbean.

The Jewish immigrants were welcomed by the Spanish settlers in Puerto Rico and were mostly allowed to live in peace, although they were sometimes looked down upon by some of the Spanish settlers.

Today, there is a small but vibrant Jewish community in Puerto Rico that is composed of descendants of the original Jewish immigrants as well as more recent Jewish immigrants from places like the United States, Israel, and Latin America. This community celebrates their Jewish heritage and customs such as eating kosher food, celebrating the Jewish holidays, and observing the Sabbath.
