ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Jirga

Imagine you and your friends have a fight and you can't agree on what should happen next. Instead of getting angry and just fighting more, you go to your wise old neighbor who knows all about solving problems peacefully. This wise old neighbor is like a leader in your community and his job is to help people settle disputes and make good decisions. He gathers everyone involved in the disagreement together and listens to everyone's side. Then, he talks to each person and helps them come to a fair agreement that makes everyone happy.

This is kind of like what a Jirga is. In some parts of the world, like Afghanistan and Pakistan, a Jirga is a group of respected elders who are chosen to help solve disputes between people. The Jirga listens to both sides, talks to everyone involved, and comes up with a decision that everyone agrees with. It's like a court, but instead of having a judge, there are wise elders who make the decision. People trust the Jirga to make fair decisions because the elders are experienced and respected members of the community. So, when you have a problem that you can't solve on your own, you can go to the Jirga and they will help you find a peaceful solution.
