John B. Calhoun was a politician in the United States. He lived from 1782-1850. He served as a member of the US House of Representatives and then as Vice President of the United States. He is remembered as a strong supporter of slavery in the South and of the expansion of the US into Native American lands. He developed his own doctrine of nullification, the idea that states had the right to reject or nullify laws passed by the federal government. This idea caused a lot of political tension in the US during his lifetime and for many years afterward.
