ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

John Harrison

John Harrison lived a long time ago in England. He was a very smart man who loved to make things. One thing he made was a special clock called a chronometer. This clock was different from other clocks because it could tell time even when a ship was bouncing around on the wavy ocean.

Before John's clock, sailors would have a hard time figuring out where they were on a map because regular clocks would not work on the ship. But with John's clock, sailors could figure out their position on the map, and they wouldn't get lost.

John worked really hard on making his clock very accurate, but some people didn't believe that it could work. So he had to prove to them that it worked by going on a long, long boat trip to a faraway land. When he got there, he compared his clock to the sun and stars, and he was right!

He became famous and people loved his clock. Even today, people still use his idea to make clocks that help them find their way when they are lost.
