ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Judicial override

Judicial override is when a judge changes the sentence that a jury agreed on. Often times a jury will decide what a person should get for a sentence, but the judge has the power to decide to change it if needed. It is like the judge is saying that the jury's decision isn't good enough and needs a different sentence. They can make it more or less serious depending on what they think is best.
