ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Jurat

Hi there! So, a jurat is a fancy word for a way that a grown-up can promise that something they wrote or said is true.

Basically, let's say a grown-up wrote a letter saying that they saw someone do something important. That grown-up would need to make a promise, or an oath, that what they wrote in the letter is true. The jurat is the part at the bottom of the letter where the grown-up swears and signs their name to make that promise.

It's kind of like if you promise your mom that you brushed your teeth before bed. You might say "I promise!" and then sign your name to show her that you really meant it. A jurat is like that, but for grown-ups and for serious things like legal documents or court papers.
