ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kōkyū

Kōkyū is a special type of breathing exercise that comes from Japan. It's all about breathing in and out slowly and deeply to help you relax and be calm.

To start, sit down in a comfortable position with your eyes closed. Breathe in through your nose and fill up your belly with air, like a balloon. Hold the air in for a few seconds, and then slowly breathe out through your mouth.

As you breathe in and out, imagine that you're blowing up a balloon inside your belly with each inhale, and then letting the air slowly out like you're letting the air out of a balloon with each exhale.

You can do kōkyū for as long as you like, but it's usually recommended to do it for 5-10 minutes at a time. It's also a great exercise to do if you're feeling stressed or anxious, as it can help calm your mind and body.
