Kandovan and Osku are two places in Iran that are known for their unique and interesting rock formations.
Imagine playing with a bunch of rocks and stacking them in different ways. Sometimes you might stack them on top of each other like a tower, and other times you might make a circle of rocks.
This is kind of what happened in Kandovan and Osku, except the rocks were formed naturally over a very long time!
A lot of years ago, there was volcanic activity in the area, which means that hot lava and ash spewed out and covered everything in sight. The lava and ash cooled and hardened over time, making big, solid rock formations.
Over hundreds and thousands of years, the wind and rain helped shape the rocks into the unique and interesting shapes that we see today. Some of the rocks look like giant cones, while others look more like round domes.
People started living in these places a long time ago because the rocks provided a naturally cool and sheltered area to live in. They also used the rocks to build houses, carving and digging out rooms and tunnels inside.
Today, visitors can come and see these amazing rock formations up close and even stay in some of the cave houses that have been turned into hotels!
