Karva Chauth is a special fasting festival celebrated by some people in India. On this day, married women (like mommies) fast without food and water from sunrise to moonrise for the well-being and long life of their husbands (like daddies).
During the day, mommies put special designs called mehndi on their hands and wear pretty clothes. In the evening, they gather with other married women in the neighbourhood and decorate a special pot called karva with things like rice, almonds, and sugar. This ritual is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.
When the moon rises, mommies break their fast by looking at the moon through a sieve and then at their husbands. Husbands give their wives water and some sweet food to eat, which they share together. The festival encourages love, respect and empathy towards a spouse.
