ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kedatuan

Okay kiddo, let me try to explain what kedatuan is in a way that's easy to understand!

So back in the olden days, Malaysia didn't have just one big government like we do today. Instead, it was made up of a bunch of smaller kingdoms or states, each with its own ruler. The ruler of each state was called a sultan, and his land was called a kedatuan.

Think of it like different kids in a classroom - each kid has his or her own desk and space to work in, and the teacher (or in this case, the king) oversees the whole class (or country). Each kid might have their own rules or way of doing things in their desk, but the teacher makes sure everyone follows the bigger rules for the classroom.

In Malaysia, the different sultans would sometimes fight or argue with each other, but they also worked together to make sure their people were safe and had what they needed. Eventually, as time went on, the government got bigger and the country became more united. But people still use the term kedatuan today to talk about those old kingdoms and rulers.
