Kiel probe

Imagine you have a basket of apples and you have to sort them out to figure out which ones are good and which ones are bad. The kiel probe is a tool that helps scientists do something similar but with dirt and soil samples.

The kiel probe is a long metal tube that is pushed into the ground to collect a sample of the soil. It looks like a long, skinny straw, but instead of drinking, we put it in the ground and pull it back up. When we pull the kiel probe out of the ground, we can see the different layers of soil that the probe went through. Each layer is a little different in color and texture.

Scientists use the kiel probe to study the different layers of soil and learn more about what is in the soil. They can use this information to figure out what types of plants can grow in certain areas and how to take better care of the soil to make it healthier. By doing this, we can make sure that the plants we grow are healthy and we have enough food to eat.
