Kingdoms in pre-colonial Africa

Okay, kiddo, so a long time ago in Africa, there were different groups of people who were living in different areas. Some of these groups were bigger and stronger than others, and they had their own rulers who were called kings.

These rulers had a lot of power and they were in charge of things like making laws, collecting taxes, and leading their armies. They had fancy titles like "Emperor" or "Sultan".

The kingdoms were usually named after the king, like the Kingdom of Dahomey or the Kingdom of Ashanti. These kingdoms were not just isolated places, they had trade and diplomatic relationships with other kingdoms and countries like Egypt, Arabia, and even Europe.

In some kingdoms, like the Kingdom of Ghana or the Kingdom of Mali, the kings were very rich because they controlled the gold trade. They would trade gold for salt, which was very valuable because it was used to preserve food.

These kingdoms had their own cultures, religions (like Islam, Christianity or Animism), and languages but they also had similarities with other kingdoms like the use of iron tools or the practice of slavery. Some kingdoms also had queens or powerful women in leadership roles.

When the Europeans came to Africa, they disrupted these kingdoms and made them part of their colonies. This led to a lot of conflict and suffering for the people of Africa. But it's important to remember how strong and united these kingdoms were before the Europeans arrived.
