ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kodokushi

Kodokushi is a big word that means "lonely death" in Japan. When someone passes away and there's nobody around to help or support them, they die all alone.

Usually, when someone passes away, their family or friends find out and take care of their body and belongings. But sometimes, people don't have anyone close to them or nobody knows where they are. This can happen if they are elderly or sick and living on their own, or if they have cut ties with everyone for some reason.

When someone dies all alone, it can be very sad because there's nobody there to say goodbye or remember them. Sometimes their body is not found for a long time, which can be dangerous and also make it difficult to figure out what happened. The Japanese government actually keeps track of kodokushi cases to try and prevent them from happening.

Overall, it's important to make sure we are checking in on our loved ones and people in our community so that nobody has to die lonely like that.
