ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Korea under Japanese rule

Imagine you share a toy with your friend. But one day, your friend says they are in charge of the toy now and you have to do what they say. This is kind of like what happened in Korea under Japanese rule.

Long ago, Japan was a big and powerful country. They wanted more land and resources to control, so they took over Korea in 1910. This meant that Japan was in charge of Korea and the Korean people had to do what the Japanese said.

The Japanese forced the Koreans to speak Japanese and worship Japanese gods. They made the Korean children go to Japanese schools and learn the Japanese way of doing things. The Japanese also took away important parts of Korean culture and made it their own.

This made the Korean people very sad because they weren't allowed to be proud of their own country and culture. They had to serve Japan and do what the Japanese told them to do. This went on for many years until Japan lost World War II in 1945 and had to leave Korea.

Now, Korea is its own country again and the Korean people can be proud of their own culture and way of doing things. They also have their own language and government. It was a tough time for them, but they have rebuilt and grown into a strong and vibrant country.
