Kosmos 122

Kosmos 122 is something called a "satellite" - it's like a big machine that orbits around the Earth. It was launched a long time ago, in the year 1980, by the Soviet Union (which doesn't exist anymore).

The purpose of Kosmos 122 was to help the Soviet Union spy on other countries. It had some special cameras that could take pictures of things on the ground, like buildings and military bases, and send those pictures back to the Soviet Union.

However, something went wrong with Kosmos 122. It was supposed to come back to Earth after a few months, but it didn't. Nobody knows exactly why, but some people think maybe the machine that was supposed to bring it back didn't work properly.

So for a while, Kosmos 122 just kept orbiting around the Earth, all by itself. But eventually, it started to fall closer and closer to the surface of the Earth. Scientists and engineers in different countries were very worried, because they didn't know where it would land or whether it might cause damage or harm anyone.

Finally, in 1983, Kosmos 122 did come crashing back down to Earth, in a remote part of Siberia. Luckily, nobody was hurt, but it was a very scary situation for a while. And that's the story of Kosmos 122!
