Koukoulion is a Greek word that means "owlery" in English. It's a place where owls are raised and taken care of. Now, just like we humans have our own homes to live, owls too need a place to live and feel safe in. Koukoulions are built for this very purpose - to provide shelter and safety to the owls.
Just like how we have different types of homes - big, small, with a garden, with a garage, etc., koukoulions too come in different shapes and sizes, depending on the type of owl it's meant for.
Inside the koukoulion, there are perches or stands where the owls can sit and rest. There's also a nesting area where the female owl can lay her eggs and hatch them. Additionally, there's a "door" which opens up so that food and water can be given to the owls easily.
Koukoulions are important for protecting owls because many times, humans harm these birds. Koukoulions give them a safe place to live so that they can grow up and continue to fly around, hunt for their food, and make cute hooting sounds at night!
