Kreutz sungrazer

Okay kiddo, imagine the sun as a big, round orange in the sky. Now, sometimes there are big blocks of ice and dirt floating around in space called comets. Sometimes comets come flying really close to the sun and get burned up because the sun is super hot.

A Kreutz sungrazer is a type of comet that comes really, really close to the sun – so close that it actually melts and vaporizes from the heat. These comets are part of a family that all come from the same big comet that broke apart a long, long time ago.

Scientists like to study these Kreutz sungrazers because they help us learn more about comets and how they travel through space. Plus, it's pretty cool to see a comet zoom by so close to the sun!
