LGBT rights in Suriname

In Suriname, there are some people who are different from others when it comes to who they love or how they identify their gender. This is called being LGBTQ+. For a long time, these people did not have the same rights as everyone else. But now, there are laws that protect them from being treated unfairly.

Let's start with love. Sometimes people fall in love with someone who has the same gender as them. This is called being gay, lesbian or homosexual. In Suriname, it used to be against the law to have a relationship with someone of the same gender. This made it hard for LGBTQ+ people to be open about who they are and who they love. But now, there are laws that say that it is okay to have a relationship with someone of the same gender.

Another thing that can be hard for LGBTQ+ people is the way they feel about their own gender. Some people feel like they are not the gender that was assigned to them at birth. For example, someone who was born a boy might feel like they are really a girl. This is called being transgender. In the past, transgender people in Suriname did not have the same rights as other people. But now, there are laws that protect their rights and make it easier for them to be who they are.

It's important to remember that LGBTQ+ people deserve to be treated with respect just like everyone else. They also have the right to live their lives without fear of discrimination or violence. Thanks to laws that protect their rights, LGBTQ+ people in Suriname can now enjoy more freedoms and live their lives more openly.
