La Calavera Catrina is a fancy lady skeleton that is part of a big celebration called Dia de los Muertos which in English means Day of the Dead. In Mexico and many other countries, people celebrate this day to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones who have passed away.
The Calavera Catrina was created by a famous artist from Mexico named Jose Guadalupe Posada who wanted to make fun of rich people who thought they were better than others just because they had a lot of money. He drew the Calavera Catrina wearing a fancy dress and a big hat with feathers, but even though she looked fancy and rich, she was still a skeleton.
Nowadays, people make all kinds of things with the image of the Calavera Catrina to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. They put up decorations, paint their faces like the Calavera Catrina, and even make small statues of her. It's a fun way to remember that even though we all come from different backgrounds, we will all eventually turn into skeletons and it's important to treat everyone with kindness and respect.
