DEFCON is a measure of how prepared a country is for war. It stands for Defense Condition, and the activities that they check when they measure it include things like how much food and water they have saved, how many soldiers they have ready to fight, and how much ammunition and weapons they are ready to use. The scale goes from 1-5, with 1 being the lowest level and 5 being the highest level. When a country is at DEFCON 1, they are in a high state of readiness and they may be very close to going to war.
