ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lactim

Okay kiddo, do you know what lactose is? It's a type of sugar found in milk. A lactim is kind of like lactose, but it's in a different form.

You see, sugars can exist in different forms depending on the conditions around them. Lactim is what we call a cyclic form of lactose. This means that the sugar molecules are arranged in a circle rather than a straight line.

Just like how you can twist a piece of dough into a pretzel or braid it into a hairdo, the lactose molecules can also twist and turn into different shapes to form lactim.

Scientists are really interested in lactim because it can have different properties and characteristics than regular lactose. Studying lactim can help us understand how sugars behave and how we can use them in things like food, medicine, and other products.

So that's what lactim is, kiddo. It's a special form of a sugar called lactose that scientists like to study to learn more about sugars.
