ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Landing Craft Air Cushion

Imagine if you had a boat that could fly on a cushion of air like a really cool hovercraft. Now imagine that you needed to get off the boat and onto the land but there isn't a pier or a dock to walk onto. That's where the Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) comes in!

The LCAC is a big floating machine that can carry heavy things like tanks and trucks and even people across the water to the shore. It has a flat surface area on top that looks like a big table and it's supported by a big cushion of air underneath, kind of like a big inflatable mattress.

When the LCAC gets close to the shore, it can lower a big ramp down onto the sandy beach or rocky shore. Then, anyone or anything on the LCAC can move down the ramp onto the shore without getting stuck or bogged down in the sand.

This is super helpful for military operations where they need to get troops and supplies onto a beach without using a pier or dock. The LCAC is like a big floating table that carries everything to the beach and then lowers a ramp so they can get off.

So if you ever see an LCAC floating on the water, just remember it's like a big flying boat that turns into a table so people and things can walk off onto the beach. Cool, huh?
