ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Landscape fabric

Landscape fabric is like a special blanket that people use to help keep their gardens and yards looking nice. Imagine you have a garden with lots of flowers and plants, but there are some weeds growing too. Weeds are like bad guys who take up space and steal the food and water that your pretty flowers need. Landscape fabric helps stop them in their tracks!

The fabric is usually made out of thick plastic or cloth, and people put it on the ground before they plant anything. It acts like a barrier, meaning it blocks the weeds from growing up through the soil and trying to take over. Think of it like a moat around a castle that keeps out the bad guys.

But, there's more! Landscape fabric also keeps moisture in the soil, so your plants can drink it up like a big drink of water when they get thirsty. Plus, it can help keep the soil warm when it's chilly outside. Just like how you like a cozy blanket when it's cold, plants like a cozy fabric too!

So, when you see people putting down a big sheet of material in their garden or yard, just remember it's like a special blanket that helps keep the good guys (plants) happy and the bad guys (weeds) away!
