ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Language border

Imagine you are at a big party with a lot of people. Some of the people speak English, and some of the people speak Spanish. You might be able to talk to the people who speak English because you understand what they are saying. But if someone who speaks Spanish tries to talk to you, you might not understand them because you don't know the language they are speaking.

Now imagine that there are two countries next to each other, just like the people at the party. One country speaks English, and the other country speaks Spanish. Where these countries meet is called the language border. If someone from the English-speaking country tries to talk to someone from the Spanish-speaking country, they might not understand each other because they speak different languages.

Sometimes, people who live close to the language border will learn both languages so they can communicate with people from both countries. But other times, people on one side of the border will only speak one language, and people on the other side will only speak the other language. This can make things difficult for people who want to travel or do business across the border, because they might need a translator or interpreter to help them understand each other.
