ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Languages of China

Ok, kiddo. So you know how we speak English, right? Well, there are lots of other languages out there that people use to talk to each other. One of those places is China, and in China, they have lots and lots of different languages that people use.

In fact, there are over 80 different languages that people speak in China! That's a lot, huh?

The most common one that we hear about is Mandarin, which is what they speak in the capital city of Beijing. It's kind of like how we might say "y'all" in the Southern United States or "eh" in Canada.

But there are also lots of other languages that are spoken throughout China. Some of these languages are very different from each other, so people from different parts of the country may not be able to understand each other's language very well.

One example of this is Cantonese, which is spoken in southern China. The words and sounds in Cantonese can be very different from Mandarin, even though they're both Chinese languages!

So, China is home to lots of different languages and dialects, and it can be a bit confusing for outsiders to keep track of them all. But that's what makes it such an interesting and diverse country!
