ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Largest prehistoric animals

Okay, kiddo, imagine you're at the zoo and you see a really big elephant. Now imagine the elephant is even bigger, like as big as a house! That's how big some prehistoric animals were.

The biggest prehistoric animal that we know of is called the Argentinosaurus. It was a dinosaur that lived about 90 million years ago in what is now Argentina. It was so big that it weighed as much as 11 elephants and was taller than a three-story building!

Another big animal was the Spinosaurus. It was a carnivorous dinosaur that lived about 100 million years ago in what is now Egypt. It had a long snout and huge, sharp teeth. It could grow up to 50 feet long, which is more than four school buses lined up in a row!

There was also a big animal called the Megalodon, which was a shark that lived about 2 million years ago. It was as big as a school bus and could open its jaws wider than a grown-up's arms can stretch out!

So, you can see that prehistoric animals were REALLY big, even bigger than the animals we have today. Scientists study fossils to learn more about these giants, and it's really cool to imagine what it would be like to see them in real life!
