ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Latin hypercube sampling

Okay kiddo, have you ever played a game where you had to choose different things from a list, like picking a toy from a box or choosing a color for your drawing? Latin hypercube sampling is kind of like that, but for grown-ups who need to test things out and make sure they're doing things the right way.

Let’s say we have a set of 10 potential things we could choose from, but we want to make sure we test all of them in a fair and efficient way. Instead of just randomly picking one at a time, we use Latin hypercube sampling to help us choose.

First, we divide our options into groups. We might have five groups of two things each, or two groups of five things each – it depends on how many things we have and how we want to group them.

Next, we randomly pick one thing from each group. Instead of just choosing it blindly, we make sure that each thing we choose is different from all the other things we've already picked. This helps us make sure we're getting a good spread of options to test.

Finally, we put all these things together and test them out. By using Latin hypercube sampling, we’ve made sure we're testing all our options in a fair and efficient way, without missing anything important.

So, Latin hypercube sampling is a way for grown-ups to make sure they test things out fairly and efficiently when they have lots of options to choose from. It's kind of like picking different toys from a box, but the toys are really important grown-up things, and we need to make sure we test them all in a smart way!
